How the Events are Run
Individual Events (Top three get awards)
Long Jump:
- The boys and girls will jump at different pits. I will have those marked. The top three jumps will be marked. If a student betters one of the top three places, then we will move that student into the top three. Each student will be allowed two jumps.
Softball Throw:
- There are two shot put rings next to one another. The east one is for the girls, the west is for the boys. One at a time, each boy and girl, will try two throws in a row. Where ever they hit the ground is where you mark their throw. Only the farthest throw will be marked. If they don’t throw as far as the farthest throw, then it is not marked. The top three boys and girls will be awarded.
Shoe Kick:
- The students will take turns, girls first, then the boys. All of the students, boys and girls at once have a practice kick. They all can then run out, get their shoe, and get back behind the line. All of the girls will step up to the line and kick their shoe first. The three farthest shoes are the winners. Then it is the boys turn.
Relay Races (No awards for
these events)
- I made this a relay race this year. It will be run in the same manner as the Tire relay race, instead of them rolling a tire, they will jump in potato sacks. First class to finish wins. I have many potato sacks, so each team can have about 4 sacks, so that when one person is done, the other can already have one ready to go. But at the same time, they have to hustle to get out of the sack before the next person gets back.
- Same concept as the others. Except with a golf ball and a spoon. Once the kids catch on to how the relays are run, they should have a good time. If all possible teachers, try and mix up the teams. If they get into a rut, and the other class is always winning, try putting kids in different sides. I would like if every student could find success in these relay races. If they can’t win any of the other events, they should at least have fun competing as a class.
We will run the running events in order of youngest to oldest kids.
I will be putting the kids in the races at the starting line. I will need a couple of people to help separate the kids into boy/girls and by class. I will run one race right after the other. Top two in each race will run in a final. So each class will have a boys and girls final with about 4-6 kids in each. If the teachers could write down who is the top three in each class, boys and girls, which would be great. Once a kid that doesn’t make it to the final race is done, send them to the stands to help cheer on the other kids.
What would be great is if one of the teachers could write down results, and the other helps me with getting the kids in line for the races.
Last but not least is the Tug-of-war. Very simple, one class vs. another. I will pretty much run this one. If you would like to pull with your class, please do. The kids love that kind of thing. While the kids are waiting to go, just have them cheer on one of the classes going. If we have enough time at the end of the tug of war, I with who ever wants can take on some of the older kids and defend my undefeated record. Ha
