EXPECTATIONS OF TEAM MEMEBERS

Ø      Team members are expected to be at practice daily. Jobs, detentions, haircuts, etc are not excused absences. Church functions, school activities and academic work are acceptable reasons to be absent if Coach Schuurmans is notified in advance. Practice is conducted daily beginning at 3:35 p.m. and concluding by 6:00 p.m. Team members should be at practice on time and remain until excused by a coach.

Ø      Team members are expected to come to practice prepared to improve each day. Everyday is a new challenge. Some challenges will be easier than others; keeping a positive attitude will get you through the tough times.

Ø      Team members are expected to eat healthy. Junk food, pop, and candy are not beneficial. All athletes must refrain from these foods during the season. See information in the nutrition section of the handout.

Ø      Team members are expected to follow school and team training rules. School rules are found in your student handbook. Violation of these rules can result in dismissal from the team.

Ø      Team members are expected to maintain acceptable academic grades. Students-athletes are expected to attend class daily and keep-up on all schoolwork.

Ø      Team members are expected to support all teammates. Teams are composed of individuals working together to achieve a common goal. Support each other in practice, meet, school, and other activities.

Ø      Hazing of teammates, improper behavior in the locker room or at practice and meets, and inappropriate language will not be tolerated and will be dealt with in an appropriate manner by the coaching staff.

Ø      Team members are responsible for their equipment. The Track and Field program spends a great deal to maintain the quality of our equipment. Sweats, uniforms, vaulting poles, shots, starting blocks, etc are available for athletes to use for practice and competitions. These are not for personal use.

Ø      Team members are expected to use the training room as needed. The training room opens at 2:30 p.m. each day.  If students have 8th period free they are expected to get treatment then.  “Get In, Get Done, and Get Out.” The training room is not a social place or a reason to be late.

Ø      All Team members have a 9:00 p.m. curfew the night prior to competitions they are involved in.  Any team member out beyond the 9:00 p.m. curfew will not be allowed to compete or travel with the team the following day.  The only acceptable reasons to miss curfew are church functions, school activities or family functions cleared by Coach Schuurmans prior to that night. Good Luck calls begin at approximately 9:01 p.m. the night prior to competitions.

Ø      Team members are expected to travel with the team to and from all functions.

Ø      Team members are expected to do their best daily. Success does not always come easy or quickly. Work hard each day and maintain a positive outlook on track and field. Be patient with your development becoming successful is not easy and does not happen quickly.

Ø      If you have a problem, see a coach or talk to a senior leader. There is no problem that cannot be solved by talking to someone.

Ø      Seniors are expected to be team leaders. Set a good example.

Ø      BE GREAT COMPETITORS. Expect your best daily

Ø      Norfolk Track and Field Teams are successful because of the individual who compose the team. Norfolk Teams are successful beyond the medals and trophies when great team unity, pride, and camaraderie are found within the team. Never expect to be treated differently than the rest of the team and always remember you are just as important as all other parts of the team.
