Monday, August 23

Objectives:

   *To understand the progressive steps of the Norfolk Middle School discipline policy

   *To examine textbooks checked out to students and create a record of the condition of the textbooks

   *To gather information on student experiences and interests in the area of life science

Materials:

   *Planner

   *Textbook

   *Science student-interests survey and book condition report

 

 

Activities:

   *Present the NMS discipline policy power point presentation

   *Check out science textbooks

   *Complete science student-interests survey and book condition report

Assignments:

   *Complete the science student-interests survey and book condition report (due Tuesday, August 24th)

   *Put a book cover on the science textbook (due by Thursday, August 26th)

 

 

Tuesday, August 24

Objectives:

   *To identify the steps in the scientific method

   *To understand the process of sharing scientific findings and the value of doing experiments again and again

  

Materials:

   *Old textbook

   *Accompanying handout for section 1-2 in the old science book

 

 

Activities:

   *Introduce the scientific method and its steps

   *Read pp. 6-10 in old science textbook

   *Complete reading handout

Assignments:

   *Complete the handout for section 1-2 on the scientific method (due Thursday, August 26th)

 

 

Wednesday, August 25

Objectives:

   *To identify the steps in the scientific method

   *To understand the process of sharing scientific findings and the value of doing experiments again and again

   *To compare and contrast two scientific studies

Materials:

   *Complete reading handout (section 1-2)

   *Video on the coyotes of Yellowstone National Park

 

 

Activities:

   *Check answers on handout for section 1-2 reading

   *Watch first half of video on the Yellowstone coyote study

   *Discuss similarities and differences between the two studies

Assignments:

   *None

 

 

Thursday, August 26

Objectives:

   *To compare and contrast two scientific studies

   *To introduce the concept of a hypothesis

   *To understand the difference between theory and law.

Materials:

   *Video on the coyotes of Yellowstone National Park

   *Science book

   *Section 1-3 handout

Activities:

   *Watch second half of video on the Yellowstone coyote study

   *Discuss similarities and differences between the two studies

   *Lab demonstration

   *Read pp. 14 – 23 in textbook

Assignments:

   *Read pp. 14 – 23

   *Complete handout over pp. 14 – 23 (section 1-3)

 

 

Friday, August 27

Objectives:

   *To introduce the Life Science website and its features

   *To learn to navigate through the different pages of the website

   *To gather information on student Internet experience and home Internet access

Materials:

   *Science website survey

   *Instructions for using the website’s features

 

 

Activities:

   *Collect science student-interests survey/book condition report

   *Use the Life Science website to get information about the scientific method and an upcoming reading assignment

Assignments:

   *Complete the science website survey with parents/guardians (due Friday, August 27th)
