Common noun
a word that names something that is general
Examples:  man, city, desk  
*HINT:   These nouns are usually not capitalized.

Proper Noun
a word that names something specific 
Examples:  Mount Rushmore, Ann, Pacific Ocean
*HINT: These nouns are always capitalized.

Concrete Noun
names an object that occupies space or can be recognized by the senses. (Hear, see, touch, taste, smell, feel)
Examples:   stars, thunder, milk

Abstract Noun
names an idea, quality, or characteristic
Examples:  bravery, fear, excitement

Possessive Noun
shows ownership by using an apostrophe
Examples:  Jenny's book, Friends' food, Men's ties

Collective Noun
names a group
Examples:  team, choir, crowd

Singular and Plural Nouns
Singular nouns name one of something and a plural noun names more than one of something 
Examples:  dream, dreams, wolf, wolves, deer, hero, heroes

Compound Noun
made up of two or more words used together as a single noun
Examples:  compact discs, watermelon, sisters-in-law
