FACTS ABOUT:

AFRICA

                        *40 Million children don’t go to school

                        *Most children stunted from malnutrition and drinking dirty water

                        *26 million people HIV positive (9%)

                        *Last year 2.4 million died of AIDS – roughly 6575 people daily

                        *12 million kids orphaned by AIDS

                        *Most people with AIDS are 15-49

 

UGANDA

                        *Sits on the equator

                        *Bordered by Kenya, Sudan, Congo, Rwanda, Burundi and Lake

                          Victoria

                        *Life expectancy is 42 years of age; without AIDS it increases to 62

                        *51% of people have no health care

                        *Per capita income $1400

                        *Kampala is the capital city

                        *The southern part of the country is jungle. The northern part is

                          savanna

                        *Land is rich in iron which gives it a rust-colored look

                        *Main language is English, followed by Swahili

 

                        HISTORY:

                        *Uganda was colonized (take a section and make it their own) by

                          the British in 1894

                        *1962 – Uganda gained independence

                        *Milton Obote took over as Prime Minister in 1962; named himself

                          president by 1966

                        *Idi Amin – leader from 1971-1979. 300,000 deaths while in power.

                          He kicked out all East Indian business owners and took over all.

                        *Northern Uganda very violent. The Lord’s Resistance Army is a

                          group fighting in the north. They terrorize villages and steal

                          children and force them into military service or worse. 25,000

                          children abducted to serve in combat.

                        *1.7 million people IDP’s (Internally Displaced Persons) living

                          in 200 camps; 935,000 are children. They have been told they can go

                          home, but they do not feel safe

                        *Current President: President Yoweri Museveni – in power since

                          1986

 

OTHER UGANDAN FACTS

                        *Eat goats, Nile Perch, chicken, fish, little beef, fruits, vegetables,

                        *Many subsistence farms (grow enough to feed the family)

                        *Outdoor markets common

                        *Ride bikes or “Boda-boda’s” (travel from border to border)

                        *Cook with charcoal outside. No stoves or electricity

                        *Homes-thatched roofs, no running water in homes

                        *Most walk miles for water. Carry containers on their heads.

                        *Charcoal is delivered daily. One bag lasts a family one month

                        *Cassava is grown

                        *Tea leaf pickers have people who work ahead beating leaves to scare

                          away snakes (Black Mambe)
