Our vision for the Girls Basketball Program at Norfolk Public Schools is to teach and model Attitude, Balance, and Commitment (ABC's) in both basketball and in life.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

ATTENDANCE POLICY

*First unexcused absence from practice or mandatory shoot around will      

  result in not playing in one game. The individual will be allowed to sit with

  the team, but will not suit up and play.

 

*Second unexcused absence will result in the dismissal from the team.

 

*Skipping a class or leaving from lunch (sophomores) will result in not

  playing in the next game.

 

*Extra conditioning, determined by the coaching staff, will be the penalty

  for any absences from practice for any reason.

 

*Tardiness will not be tolerated. Starting time for practice is when we start,

  be early, not late.

 

*If your daughter is going to be absent from practice, please call me or the

  school to let me know.

TRAINING GUIDELINES

            *All carbonated products should be left out of each player’s diet.

 

            *It is important that each player drinks plenty of water and that they are

              eating properly.

 

            *Drinking alcohol or taking drugs of any kind is prohibited. If any player is

              found guilty of these actions, school guidelines will take care of the penalty.

 

 

            *Getting proper sleep during the night is essential in the training process of a

              basketball player.

 

            *The curfew for this season is 10:30 pm for the night before a game and two

              nights before a game. Your daughter must be home alone with NO

              VISITORS!!

 

SELECTING TEAMS

            *The 10-14 best basketball players in Grades 9-12 will participate at

              the varsity level.

 

            *The remaining players will be selected for the Junior Varsity and Reserve

              teams based upon: hard work and skill level.

 

            *There is a possibility that some girls may participate at more than one level.

 

            *Our School Cut Policy States:

              “The Norfolk Senior High basketball squads, sophomores through seniors

                may be cut to APPROXIMATELY thirty-two (32) players for boys and

                girls. The senior high basketball staff will determine which athletes will be

                cut.”

 

            *Players will be given five (5) practices to make the team. With the way

              our practice schedule is set up, that would be after practice on Wednesday.

              If a player is to be cut, the coaching staff will:

                        a. meet with that player individually on Thursday after school

                        b. explain to that player why the cut is being made

                        c. give suggestions/ideas on how to improve for the next season

                        d. explore other options (student manager, filmer, student trainer)

                       

TRAVELING

            *The majority of the time we will be traveling to away games via charter

              bus or in vans in some cases.

 

            *The coaching staff prefers that each girl ride home on the bus.

 

            *Meals on road trips will either be us ordering pizza for the way home,

              or stopping for a quick meal.

 

            *THE USE OF CELL PHONES SHOULD BE LIMITED; ONLY IN AN

               EMERGENCY!!!

 

 

 

 

 

MISCELLANEOUS

            *Violating team curfew will result in not playing the next scheduled game.

 

            *This year captains will be chosen by the coaching staff. You must apply to

              become a captain, and applications will be available the first day of

              practice.

 

            *I am a big believer in team bonding experiences. I want you to feel

              comfortable with one another, no matter what class or level of play.

              Some examples of team togetherness will include:

                        a. Pizza night after practice

                        b. Movie night

                        c. Overnighters @ a player’s home

                        d. bowling

                        e. Panther Partners

 

            *Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. However,

              discussing playing time and why your daughter is not playing will not be

              be open to conversation.

            *Practice is open to you. If you would like to come, please contact me ahead

              of time.

 

            *I have been looking forward to this day since this summer. I want you to

              know that your daughter will be treated with the utmost respect. Our

              coaching staff will clearly communicate our expectations to each player,

              as well as find and emphasize an important role for every player

              regardless of their athletic ability.
