PE and Health Class:  We will generally have PE every day during the 1st and 4th quarters of the school year.  We DO go outside on chilly days, so having a warm sweatshirt or jacket in your locker is a good idea.  There may be days we stay in the classroom for a HEALTH day if it is raining hard.  During the 2nd and 3rd quarters of the school year, we alternate PE and Health every other day.  Reminders will be posted in the room on which days are PE days and which days are HEALTH days.

No padlocks are necessary for 6th grade as we are a coed class and will not be changing in the locker rooms.  However, you DO need to have tennis shoes to participate in PE class.  If you’d like to change clothes for PE class, this option will be made available to you. I will allow students to change their clothes (in the restrooms by my classroom) after I have taken attendance. You will also be given time to change again before going on to your next class.  We spend a lot of PE time outside and sometimes the grass is wet in the mornings.  I suggest having an extra pair of socks in your locker so you can change if you want to.  It would also be a good idea to keep a deodorant (no sprays) in your locker for daily use.  I expect my students to be actively involved and participating in all activities throughout the entire school year.

THE GRADING PROCEDURE is based on a percentage scale this year.  NO more S, N or U marks.  In PE, all students will be graded daily.  This grade will focus on being present and on time to class, actively participating, and good sportsmanship.  You MUST have your tennis shoes with you every day in order to receive points each day.  The grade will be based on total points.  For example, if there are a total of 600 points in one trimester and you have 550 points, then you will receive a 92%. The grading scale is posted in the PE/Health room.  Your grade can suffer if you are not ready for class, so PREPARE and be RESPONSIBLE.  Health will average in with the PE grades when we start that part of the curriculum.

EXTRA CREDIT will be made available to all students throughout the year.  The extra credit will remain consistent for every student.  Students will need to listen in class for these opportunities and due dates.

ASSIGNMENTS (for health class) are to be turned in on time!! You are now becoming young adults and you must be responsible for your work. If late assignments become a problem, certain privileges will be taken away and parents will be contacted. I don't want you to have to spend your after school time in the classroom completing late work when I know you'd rather be out doing your own activities. Make the RIGHT decisions. I will always do my best to help you out, but you must also help yourselves.

LATE ASSIGNMENTS (for health class) are any assignments that are not handed in at the time they are called for (usually at the beginning of the class period). Late assignments will result in a reduction in grade for that particular assignment. Any assignment that is late within a week's time of the due date will only be able to receive a maximum of an 80%. Any assignment that is later than a week will only be able to receive a maximum of a 50%. Students will be kept after school according to the school policy until late work has been completed.

MISSING SCHOOL:

PE:  You will be allowed two ‘free’ absences.  After that, you will need to see me so we can determine how/when you will make up the time that you missed PE class.  Generally, we will meet in the fitness room and spend 20 minutes of workout in that room.  This can be done before or after school.

HEALTH:  Students are responsible for all make-up work. The school policy will be followed. If tests or quizzes are missed, the student is responsible for setting up a time to complete this work. Please make sure that you are prepared…you must make the effort to get ANY missed work (this includes notes).

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

    1. Be on time (we want to get started right away so we have the most amount of time to be ACTIVE)
    2. Come to class prepared (PE:  Appropriate clothing/shoes,  HEALTH:  paper, writing utensil, assignment)
    3. Respect others, school, and personal property
    4. Use appropriate language
    5. Listen carefully and follow instructions the first time
    6. Deal with conflicts peacefully
    7. No horseplay

BEHAVIORS IN PE and HEALTH CLASS

All students must abide by the student expectations listed above. Appropriate behavior is always expected.  SAFETY has to be my number one concern in PE class.  Inappropriate behaviors and disrespect can lead to someone getting hurt and we have to avoid those situations.  I want EVERYONE in class to have the safest environment possible.  The following discipline format will be used IF necessary:

          1st Offense: Informal warning

2nd Offense: Talk to me right after class (possible sit-down time during PE class)

3rd Offense: Time spent after school (possible sit-down time during PE class AND parents may also be contacted)

          4th Offense: Principal's office

I can, at any time, skip the offense line order if certain behaviors need to be dealt with immediately.
