IMMIGRATION

The United States has long been referred to as a “melting pot” and more recently as a “tossed salad.” The truth is that we are mostly a nation of immigrants. This site will help you look at the history of immigration in the US and how it has affected us past and present.

Explore this brief overview of immigration in the 1700’s-1800’s and write one paragraph about “who” came and “why” they came. How did the “who” and the “why” change during the early 1900’s?

There are two main immigration stations in history. One is the famous, Ellis Island. The second is the less famous Angel Island. Write a brief paragraph describing and contrasting the two places.

Look at the History of Immigration Laws and write about three that made it more difficult to immigrate. Write a paragraph describing how you would feel if these laws were written to keep you out and how would you respond to these laws.

Examine the New Americans website and trace the life of one person. Describe the new American you are learning about in one paragraph and then write another paragraph describing their rich culture and how their culture will make the US a better place.
