The Board of Education met on Thursday, August 26, for the 2nd monthly meeting at 11:30 a.m. at the Administration Office Board Room.  Members present included Brad Krivohlavek, Jim Scheer, Paul Cazabon, Julee Pfeil, and Alfredo Ramirez.  Absent:  Jane McDaniel.  Also present were Superintendent Randy Nelson Robert Waite, Doug Witte and Dan DePasquale.

 

At 11:36 a.m. President Scheer called the meeting to order and declared a legally advertised meeting of the Board of Education.

 

Attendance at Regional School Board Meeting – Dr. Nelson asked the board to review their calendar and to let Veryle know if they planned to attend the Regional School Board Meeting scheduled for Thursday, September 23, at the Lifelong Learning Center in Norfolk.

 

Approval of Safety, Transportation, Classified Manuals, and Certified Manuals – It was moved by Alfredo Ramirez, seconded by Brad Krivohlavek, to approve the safety, transportation, classified manuals, and certified manuals.  Roll call: Aye:  Scheer, Krivohlavek, Ramirez, Pfeil, and Cazabon.  Nay:  None.  Absent:  McDaniel.  Motion carried.

 

Budget Discussion  -- Dr. Nelson distributed a handout on the proposed budget for 2004-05 school year.  He stated that all the counties have now verified the valuations which shows a 2.2 percent increase.  The valuation increase is $29,940,310.    The additional taxes needed by Norfolk Public Schools would have an impact of about $27 additional taxes on a $100,000 home or $2.25 per month.  The administration is recommending a 2.4 percent increase in the total budget of the district.

 

Other Items of Discussion:

 

ü      All migrant families are automatically given free school lunches.  It was noted that this would help our district when figuring state aid.

ü      The board was asked to fill out a survey, The Pro, which will help analyze the NPS Foundation Director position

 

Executive Session -- At 12:22 p.m. it was moved by Alfredo Ramirez, seconded by Julee Pfeil, to move into executive session for the purpose of discussion of teacher negotiations.  Roll call: Aye:  Scheer, Krivohlavek, Ramirez, Pfeil, and Cazabon.  Nay:  None.  Absent:  McDaniel.  Motion carried.

 

End Executive Session -- At 12:47 p.m. it was moved by Paul Cazabon, seconded by Julee Pfeil, to end the executive session and move back to regular session. Roll call: Aye:  Scheer, Krivohlavek, Ramirez, Pfeil, and Cazabon.  Nay:  None.  Absent:  McDaniel.  Motion carried.

 

Adjournment – Jim Scheer, President, declared the meeting adjourned at 12:48 p.m.
