LINCOLN LIONS MAY NEWS

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Wow! We are already to the month of May and the school year is coming to a close. It seems as if every school year goes a little quicker than the one before. The students and staff at Lincoln have worked extremely hard this year and a great deal has been learned. I hope that your year has gone well. I want to take this time to thank the parents and family members who have supported the school throughout the year. We would not be as strong of a school without your support. Students and staff members at Lincoln benefit from your involvement every day.
It is very important that your child becomes involved in something this summer that is structured and will keep their brain active. Summer is a great time for students to relax and have fun. However, it is just as important that they are spending their time doing things that are constructive and that they have to get up for in the morning. Please see to it that your child is kept busy this summer! It is important that students spend time each day reading, working on math facts and writing. There are a number of ways to do this that will still allow your child to have a great summer of fun and relaxation. First, set aside time each day for your child to read, write and do math facts while they are at home. This time does not need to be long, maybe an hour or 45 minutes. The time that students spend in the summer working on these areas, the better off they will be when they get back to school in August.
Secondly, there are a number of great summer reading programs that can help your child stay on top of their academic gains. The Norfolk Public Library has a summer reading program titled “Paws, Claws, Scales and Tails.” It would benefit your child a great deal if they were to be involved with this program. All you have to do is go to the public library and register. Registration begins on May 22nd. We will not have our Tuesday night Family Reading Night this summer. Attendance has been poor the last couple of summers and this is why we will not have it on Tuesdays this summer.
Family Reading Night will come to an end on Tuesday, May 9th. Family Reading Night has been successful this school year and a lot of students were able to participate once again this year. I want to thank Mrs. Pam Weyrich for her dedication to running Family Reading Nights. If you have the chance to thank her, please do so.
I would like to take this time to thank everyone who has been involved with the Lincoln PIC (Parent Involvement Committee). PIC has done a great job this year of improving our school and creating fun activities for our students and staff. I would like to recognize the PIC officers for their outstanding dedication and hard work. Chris Griffith, Jan Jensen, Karen Pochop and Janice Kingham have done a great job as PIC officers this year. They have been very creative and they have made the school year a lot of fun for students and staff
During the month of May, there will be no more charges on lunch accounts. All past charges need to be taken care of before school is let out.
There are a number of great activities that are coming in the month of May. The Drug Free Picnic and Carnival will be held on May 5th from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Our fourth quarter Accelerated Reader Assembly will be held on May 18th. This year there will be a fifth grade track meet and it will be held on May 17th. On May 11th, we will have a track meet for our sixth grade students. Both will be held at the track at Norfolk Senior High. Also, on May 18th, we will hold our Sixth Grade Recognition in the gym at Lincoln. This will start at 6:30 p.m.
I want to remind you that the last day of school is Wednesday, May 24th with an 11:30 a.m. dismissal.
I hope that you all have a great summer. I also hope that summer is a peaceful and relaxing time for you and your family. Again, please take the time this summer to work with your child over the summer so that they can come back to school in August ready to go. Have a great summer break!
Sincerely,

Cory Worrell
